VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team scored twice in a span of 3:30 during the second half to claim a 3-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action on Sunday afternoon at Foster Field.
After the Marlins (4-3-1, 1-1-1) scored at the 57:01 mark to knot the game at 1-1, the Generals (4-2-1, 2-0) bounced right back just 6:29 later when sophomore midfielder Kevin Molnar (Mendham, N.J. / Delbarton School) scored off of an assist from junior forward Geinda Smith (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) to give W&L a 2-1 lead at the 63:30 mark. Senior midfielder Ben Bayles (Fleming Island, Fla. / Fleming Island) then found the net off of another assist dished out from Smith at 67:00 to provide some breathing room in the 3-1 win.
W&L assumed a 1-0 lead just 3:34 into the game when sophomore midfielder Austin Gilbert (Marshfield, Wis. / Marshfield) found the back of the net off of a corner kick. The Generals maintained the lead into the second half when first-year forward Ricky Perrault scored off an assist from junior defender Robert Holschuh in the 58th-minute, setting up the Generals' two-goal flurry.
W&L outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 19-11, and both teams took three corner kicks.
Sophomore goalie Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) recorded his third win of the season, after playing all 90 minutes of action in net for the Generals and stopping five shots. Senior Connor Kirkham suffered the loss for the Marlins, playing the entire match in goal and finishing with five saves.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Emory & Henry for a 4:00 pm contest.
