BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the final nine minutes to record a 3-1 victory over Southern Virginia on Wednesday night at The Fields.
Senior forward Ben Bayles (Fleming Island, Fla. / Fleming Island) notched the game-winning tally in the 81st-minute when he played a deflected ball into the goal. Bayles then fed sophomore forward Reeves Duggan (Birmingham, Ala. / Indian Springs School) for another goal with five seconds remaining in the contest for the final margin.
Junior midfielder David Cohen (Chesterfield, N.J. / Northern Burlington County Regional) netted the first goal of the game off of a feed from junior defender Patrick Barry (West Roxbury, Mass. / Roxbury Latin School) at the 16:51 mark for a 1-0 lead that W&L (2-1-1) held until the second half.
The Knights (0-4) responded when first-year midfielder Gabriel Ramirez scored off an assist from junior forward Josh Smith on a free kick to tie the game at 1-1 with 14 minutes remaining in the contest. However, Bayles broke the tie just 4:24 later to give the Generals the win.
The Blue and White led the Knights in shots, 19-11. W&L also held the edge in corner kicks, 5-3.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) and junior goalie Connor Hayward (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) split time in net for the Generals, combing for four saves. Hayward earned the victory. Junior keeper Keenan Carroll took the loss for SVU, but played all 90 minutes of action and made seven saves.
W&L returns to the field on Saturday when it hosts Catholic. The match is set to start at 4:30 pm.
