LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year midfielder Kevin Lencioni (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) netted the game-winning goal with 17 seconds remaining in the first half to lift the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Greensboro in its season-opener on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (1-0) and the Pride (0-1) were scoreless the entire first half until Lencioni tallied his first collegiate goal off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Austin Gilbert (Marshfield, Wis. / Marshfield) at the 44:43 mark of the first stanza.
First-year midfielder James Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) provided an insurance goal for W&L when he headed home his first collegiate tally in the 71st minute off a corner kick that was served by Lencioni.
The Generals led the Pride in shots, 12-9, and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gillen Beck (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) played all 90 minutes of action for the Blue and White and posted five saves. Sophomore goalie Jamie Payamps (Jacksonville, Fla. / Atlantic Coast) suffered the loss for Greensboro, also playing the entire contest and stopping four shots.
W&L returns to action on Friday when it travels to Washington, D.C., to take on Berry in the Catholic University Tournament. The match is set to start at 3:30 pm.
