VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. –Virginia Wesleyan held on to an early lead as it defeated the Washington and Lee men's soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex Stadium.
VWC (8-4-2/4-2) Kyle Fisher scored for the Marlins off a Brian Cornell assist to take the 1-0 lead. The Generals (6-1-5/4-1-2) recorded two shots on goal the last five minutes of the half, but were unable to find the net.
Both squads played strong in the second half, but the scoreboard remained unchanged as the host Marlins held on for the 1-0 victory.
For the game, both teams notched 14 shots, while the Blue and White held an 10-3 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./SewickleyAcademy) played all 90:00 in net for the Generals, recording five saves. Marlins keeper Connor Kirkham also played the duration, stopping nine shots.
The Generals return to action on Friday when they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 4:30 pm contest.
