LEXINGTON, Va. – After ending 110 minutes of action in a 1-1 tie, the Washington and Lee men's soccer team was knocked out of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament by Virginia Wesleyan, 3-1, in penalty kicks on Thursday afternoon at Watt Field. The game officially goes down as a tie, but the Marlins advance to the ODAC Tournament Championship game on Sunday.
Sophomore midfielder Josh McNamara (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) netted the final penalty kick for VWC (8-9-2), while first-year midfielder Josh Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Addison Trinity Christian) and junior midfielder Brian Cornell (Front Royal, Va./Warren County) each also had successful attempts.
In the first half, sophomore forward Isaac Arrington (DeSoto, Texas/Midlothian) opened the scoring with a goal in the seventh minute to put the Marlins up, 1-0.
Senior forward Dave Phillips (Reistertown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) evened the score at 1-1 at the 34:11 mark when he flicked in the ball off a cross from senior defender Basti Richter (Gauting, Germany/Darlington School).
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second half or either overtime, causing the game to enter the shootout.
In goal for W&L (11-4-3) was sophomore Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy), who registered three saves and one goal-against in 110:00.
First-year Jake Burtch (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam) spent the entire game in net for the Marlins, collecting two saves and one goal-against.
With being eliminated from the tournament, the Generals have completed their 2012 campaign.
