WINCHESTER, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team took a three-goal lead in the first half to break away from Shenandoah, allowing for a 4-0 victory by the Generals on Wednesday evening at Sprint Field.
With a 15-1 shot count advantage in the first half, the Generals dominated the offensive end in the opening 45:00 of the game. Senior defender Conor Starr (Summit, N.J./The Pingry School) netted the first score with a header after a pass from senior defender Basti Richter (Gauting, Germany/Darlington School).
Less than five minutes later, Starr passed off the ball to junior midfielder Alex Zelinski (Rochester Hills, Mich./Brother Rice), who found the back of the net at the 17:54 mark.
Nearing the end of the first period, junior midfielder Justin TenBrook (Millville, N.J./St. Augustine School) sent a pass to Starr, who then registered his second goal of the contest and W&L's third, allowing the Generals to enter halftime with a 3-0 lead.
The second stanza was much the same, as W&L held the majority of the possession. This paid off at 84:21 when sophomore midfielder Nick Zaharchuk (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) tallied the Generals' fourth goal. W&L held off the Hornets for the remainder of the game and claimed the 4-0 victory.
The Generals held an advantage in both number of shots (24-4) and number of corner kicks (10-2).
With the win, W&L improves to 7-4 overall (4-1 ODAC), while SU falls to 2-9-1 on the season (0-5 ODAC).
Splitting time in goal for the Blue and White were sophomores Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and Ben Atnipp (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid). Civitarese recorded the shutout in his 67:54 in net and Atnipp stopped two shots in the remaining 22:06.
