LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team gained its first win in ODAC competition with a 3-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday evening at Watt Field.
With the win, the Generals improve to 4-2 (1-1 ODAC) on the season, while the Marlins fall to 2-4 (1-1 ODAC) overall.
With the Generals claiming much of the possession in the first half, sophomore forward Zach Colby (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) was able to net the first goal of the contest after catching a pass from sophomore midfielder Toby D'Ambola (Marietta, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain) and flicking the ball over VWC first-year goalkeeper Jake Burtch (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam) in the 22nd minute.
Colby continued his excellent scoring season with W&L's second goal, and his eighth goal of the year, at the 30:12 mark. Sophomore midfielder Max Quellhorst (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) passed the ball from behind the box to an open Colby, who ran past defenders and knocked the ball in over the goalkeeper's head to put the Blue and White up 2-0. The score remained the same going into the break.
With the two tallies from today's contest, Colby has now scored more goals than any W&L player has in a season since the 2007 campaign when Josh Dodds '07 netted 10 goals.
Just over two minutes into the second period, D'Ambola kicked in the Generals' final goal after beating the goalkeeper to a free ball near the net (3-0).
The Marlins added pressure in the second half that brought many scoring opportunities, including a shot by junior defender Reid Peterson (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) that resulted from a cluster of players near the goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) came forward in the box, but was able to break through the crowd to stop the attempt and allow the Generals to end regulation with a 3-0 advantage.
In goal for W&L was Civitarese, registering two saves and no goals-against in the 90:00 of play.
Burtch and junior Scott Westfall (Allen, Texas/Addison Trinity Christian) split time in the net for VWC. Burtch collected four saves and three goals-against in the first 75:37 and Westfall recorded one save in the remaining 14:23.
W&L returns to action on Saturday, when it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 3:00 pm contest.
