GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team dropped its opening ODAC match to Guilford, 2-1, Saturday evening at the Armfield Athletic Center.
W&L took an early 1-0 lead, as first-year midfielder Benjamin Bayles (Fleming Island, Fla./Fleming Island) kicked in a deflected ball after a corner kick at 5:18.
The next score of the contest did not come until the 40:57 mark when GC sophomore forward Chris Gillespie netted his first of two goals for the Quakers, bringing the score to an even 1-1 entering halftime.
Less than 10 minutes into the second period, Gillespie fired GC's game-winning tally from the top of the box. Despite outshooting the Quakers 8-4 in the final 45:00, the Generals could not pull ahead, dropping their first conference game.
Sophomore Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) spent the entire game in goal for W&L, stopping five shots and allowing two goals-against.
Protecting the net for GC was junior Michael MacVane, who recorded three saves and one goal-against in 45:00.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Virginia Wesleyan for a 4:30 pm contest.
