LANCASTER, Pa. – Elizabethtown held on to an early lead as it defeated the Washington and Lee men's soccer team, 1-0, on Saturday evening at the Manheim Township Parks & Recreation Complex in Lancaster, Pa.
Elizabethtown (2-1) capitalized on an early corner kick to take a 1-0 lead at the 7:46 mark. Senior midfielder Cris Ugarte took a corner kick for the Blue Jays, and after a deflection by junior defender Bryan Strode, senior defender Geoff Cochrane snuck a shot past W&L senior keeper Ben Petitto (Gainesville, Fla./St. Francis Catholic) for the goal.
The Generals (1-1) had their share of opportunities in the first half, outshooting host Elizabethtown 5-2, but were unable to find the net.
Both squads played strong in the second half, but the scoreboard remained unchanged as the host Blue Jays held on for the 1-0 victory.
For the game, E-Town led the Generals in both shots (9-8) and corner kicks (6-3).
Petitto played all 90:00 in net for the Generals, recording two saves. Elizabethtown keeper Eric Carr also played the duration, stopping four shots.
The Generals return to action on Sunday for day two of the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic, facing DeSales at 10:00 am.
