LEXINGTON, Va. -- Fifth-ranked Washington and Lee opened its 2002 lacrosse season with a 10-2 win over Bates College on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (1-0) opened the scoring with 5:10 remaining in the opening period as senior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) found the net off an assist from senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) for an extra man goal. W&L pushed its lead to 2-0 just 4:09 later as Moore scored off an assist from freshman attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport). The Generals would go on to score the next three goals and held a 5-0 halftime lead.

Following the break, W&L again went on a three-goal spurt to assume an 8-0 lead as sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) notched one goal and one assist during the stretch.

Bates (0-1) responded with its first goal at the 4:21 mark of the third period in a man-up situation as senior attackman Dave Frederick (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) scored an unassisted tally.

The Generals then retaliated with an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) at the 2:28 mark of the third period, and a goal by Moore off an assist from Fink with 11:19 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Bates rounded out the scoring with 8:02 remaining as senior attackman Jack Sandler (Hicksville, N.Y./Friends Academy) scored unassisted.

Barnett led the Generals with three goals, while Martin posted two goals and one assist. Fink totaled one goal and two assists. Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) recorded nine saves in his first career start in goal.
