LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) released its 2018 Scholar All-American team on Monday and Washington and Lee senior defenseman Kyle Gifford (Darien, Conn. / Darien) was among the honorees.
The USILA recognized 76 senior players from Division III for achieving a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and who are also an All-American, member of the North-South Team and/or for being all-conference. Student-athletes are expected to have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to themselves, their institution and to college lacrosse on and off the field.
Gifford earned the honor after also receiving USILA Honorable Mention All-America laurels in 2018. He started 19 contests and anchored a defense that led the ODAC in scoring defense with an 8.20 goals-against average. He tallied 22 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers, to go along with one goal.
A two-time First Team All-ODAC pick and three-time all-conference selection overall, Gifford played in 72 career games, totaling 76 ground balls and 47 caused turnovers across his four seasons.
Gifford graduated in May with a degree in accounting & business administration.
W&L has had five USILA Scholar All-Americans over the last three years and now has 39 total Scholar All-America honorees since 1990.
Washington and Lee completed the 2018 season with a 15-5 overall record and a perfect 9-0 mark in ODAC play. The Generals produced a 14-game winning streak, tied for the second-longest in program history. W&L received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the third round, before falling to Dickinson, 10-9, in overtime.
