BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team scored nine first-quarter goals in posting an 18-5 victory over Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon at Jopson Field.
The victory extended the Generals' win streak to 10 games, as W&L has not tasted defeat since a 12-10 loss to fourth-ranked Denison back on February 18.
Much of the early damage in the win over the Eagles (8-5, 2-4) was inflicted by junior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum), who scored four goals in a game-opening five-goal run for the Generals (10-3, 6-0). Bridgewater got on the board with a man-up goal by senior attackman Blake Mann off an assist from junior attackman Sean MacLeish at the 6:49 mark of the first quarter, but the Blue & White finished the opening period with four more unanswered goals for a 9-1 advantage.
The Generals kept their foot on the gas throughout the second period, extending to a 14-1 lead, before Mann ended the surge with a second goal for BC with just eight seconds remaining before the halftime break. Junior midfielder Walker Brown (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) and first-year attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) recorded one goal and one assist each during the second period scoring surge for W&L.
W&L substituted freely in the second half and Bridgewater scored the lone tally of the third period. The Generals found the net for the first time in the second half with 11:02 left in the fourth quarter, scoring four times in the period en route to the 13-goal margin of victory.
Washington and Lee held a 44-26 advantage in shots and a 44-25 edge in ground balls. The Generals also took 18-of-25 faceoffs in the contest.
A.J. Witherell paced the offense with six goals and one assist, all recorded in the first half of play. He now claims 204 career points, the seventh player in program history to top 200 career points. His 123 goals also rank fifth all-time at W&L.
Sophomore midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) added two goals, while Brown, Taylor Witherell, senior attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) and first-year midfielder Ben Mulholland (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) all had one goal and one assist. Three goalkeepers played for the Generals, combining to make nine saves. First-year Jack Taylor (Baltimore, Md. / Saint Paul's) notched the win after playing the first two quarters and making one save with two goals allowed.
Bridgewater was led by Mann, who tallied three goals. Senior Kevin Metzger and junior Hunter Bagby both played in goal for the Eagles and they combined to make 10 saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Susquehanna University for a 4:00 pm contest.
