W&L Men's Lacrosse Downs Roanoke, 9-7

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee jumped out to a 4-0 first-half lead and never looked back in claiming a 9-7 victory over Roanoke in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Sophomore midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) and senior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) hooked up for the Generals' (6-4, 3-0) first two goals of the game.  Zanetis took a Wood pass and beat Roanoke (7-4, 3-1) senior goalkeeper Charles Pease (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) for the opening score just 1:19 into the game.  Wood then fed Zanetis for another goal at 10:55 of the first for a 2-0 lead. 

Junior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) scored unassisted at 4:34 of the first period and junior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) capped the opening rally with a goal at 8:14 of the second period for a 4-0 lead.

Roanoke recovered to score two straight goals that cut it to a 4-2 game at the half.  Sophomore attackman Nick Wolf (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) scored off an assist from junior attackman Colin Rossano (Topsfield, Mass./Pingree School) at the 6:03 mark and sophomore attackman Will Pilat (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) found rope off a feed from sophomore attackman Tyler McWilliams (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) with 1:35 left in the half. 

Lewis gave W&L a 5-2 lead with an unassisted tally just 58 seconds into the third period and, following a Maroons' goal at 3:27, senior midfielder Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y./Chaminade) ensured the Generals would carry a three-goal lead into the fourth period when he scored with 1:47 left in the penultimate quarter.

The Generals scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to assume a 9-3 lead with 11:00 remaining.  Senior midfielder Drew Kenavan (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) scored on the break at 13:33 and Lewis scored off an assist from Wood at 11:46.  Wood then capped the run with a man-up goal 46 seconds later off an assist from Zanetis.

Roanoke scored four goals in the final 8:35, including a pair by first-year attackman Kevin Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola-Blakefield), to close within the final score of 9-7.

Lewis scored a game-high three goals, while Zanetis tallied a career-best three points on two goals and one assist.  Wood notched one goal and three assists, and senior midfielder Jared Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) won 12 out of 19 faceoffs on the day.  Junior Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) played the duration in goal and posted nine saves.

Jackson and sophomore midfielder Joey Dishaw (Salem, Va./Salem) paced the Maroons with two goals each.  Pease also played all 60 minutes in goal, producing 11 saves.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm contest.
