W&L Men's Lacrosse Falls to No. 17 Mary Washington, 7-6

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior attackman Griffin Burke scored with just 44 seconds remaining to lift 17th-ranked Mary Washington to a 7-6 victory over Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground.

The Generals (2-4) knotted the game at 6-6 with 4:01 left when junior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) scored unassisted.  The Eagles were hit with a stall call with just over a minute remaining and were facing a restart with just three seconds left on the warning.  Senior attackman Billy Kelly found Burke with a long pass over goal to the opposite side of the field and Burke beat W&L junior goalkeeper Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla. / Lake Highland Prep) from 8-yards out for the game-winner.

The Eagles (6-0) never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the opening minute of the contest on goals by senior attackman Luke Dick and Burke just 36 seconds apart.  W&L got on the board at the 5:20 mark of the first quarter when junior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Durham Academy) scored in transition off an assist from junior long-stick midfielder Noah Lessing (Babylon, N.Y. / Babylon), but senior attackman John Bohlinger (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) scored unassisted at the 11:27 mark of the second quarter to give UMW a 3-1 lead. 

The Blue & White tied the game at 3-3 with goals 24 seconds apart.  Senior attackman Sean Gebhard (Fox Point, Wis. / Marquette University School) found rope on a man advantage off a feed from Lewis at 9:48 and Lewis scored in transition off an assist from senior midfielder Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y. / Chaminade) at 9:24.

Mary Washington had a quick response, however, scoring two goals in a span of 20 seconds to claim a 5-3 lead before the half.  Senior midfielder Chip Pittard (Setauket, NY / Ward Melville) found the net from Dick at 6:19 and Bohlinger scored off an assist by junior midfielder J.D. West at 5:59.

Berenis spelled sophomore Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) in goal for the second half and shut the Eagles out in the third quarter, making five saves during the period.  However, the Generals could not find the goal either and the Eagles carried the two-goal advantage into the final quarter.

W&L scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 5-5 with 6:54 left.  Paglia scored unassisted at 12:43 and Reuter beat UMW senior goalkeeper Zak DelGrosso off an assist from junior attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. / Culver Academy) with 6:54 to play.

Bohlinger scored his third goal of the day man-up from Kelly with 5:00 remaining, setting up the flurry to finish the contest.

Washington and Lee's offense was led by Lewis' two goals and one assist.  Paglia scored two goals, while Reuter had one goal and one assist.  Devine made three saves in the first half, while Berenis totaled nine saves in the final 30 minutes.

Bohlinger led UMW with his three tallies, with Burke adding two scores.  DelGrosso posted 10 saves between the pipes, including six in the first quarter as the Eagles gained the early lead.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 4:00 pm contest.
