LEXINGTON, Va. – The 15th-ranked Denison men's lacrosse team capped a game of runs by scoring four of the final five goals to take an 11-9 win over 13th-ranked Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Big Red (2-0) broke open a 2-2 game midway through the first period by scoring five of the game's next six goals for a 7-3 lead with 8:39 left in the first half. Junior attackman Teddy Powell (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) and sophomore midfielder Blair Farinholt (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) both scored two goals during the stretch, while senior attackman Eddie Vita (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) posted a pair of assists.
The Generals (2-1) began a run of their own late in the second quarter, scoring five straight goals to assume an 8-7 lead with 5:53 left in the third quarter. Junior midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) got things started on an unassisted goal with just 24 seconds left in the second period. W&L senior midfielder Jared Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) then won the ensuing faceoff and, after playing it back into his own defensive end, the Generals scored in transition as junior attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y/Loomis Chaffee) found rope from sophomore midfielder Andrew Riehl (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's) with time expiring to make it 7-5 at the half.
The beginning of the third quarter was all W&L as Mitchell won the opening faceoff and junior attackman Cam Lewis (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham Academy) scored just 58 seconds in off a feed from sophomore midfielder Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J./Delbarton). Senior midfielder Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y./Chaminade) then found sophomore midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset), who beat Denison sophomore goalkeeper Chris Thomas (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) at the 12:54 mark to tie the game at 7-7. Senior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) then gave W&L the lead (8-7) at the 5:53 mark when he scored unassisted.
The Generals continued momentum just over a minute later receiving a one minute man advantage, but could not capitalize and DU senior midfielder Chapin Speidel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) knotted the game at 8-8 heading into the fourth quarter with a goal at the 3:05 mark of the third quarter.
W&L had its chances in the fourth quarter, outshooting the Big Red 12-5 in the quarter, but Thomas notched four of his career-best 15 saves in the period to keep the Generals at bay.
Vita gave the Big Red a 9-8 lead with a goal at 11:11 and first-year attackman Luke Walsh (Buffalo, N.Y./Deerfield Academy) scored at 6:42 for a 10-8 advantage. The Generals cut it to a one-goal game with 1:31 left when Lewis scored unassisted, but Denison won the ensuing faceoff and sophomore midfielder James Meager (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) scored on an empty net with 29 seconds remaining to clinch the win for the Big Red.
W&L held a 37-28 advantage in shots and a 28-25 edge in ground balls. Senior attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) led the way with three goals , while Lewis notched two tallies. Goldman and Wood added one goal and one assist each. Junior Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) played all 60 minutes in goal and registered seven saves. The Generals forced 25 Denison turnovers led by the play of junior defenseman Noah Lessing (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon), who caused three turnovers and picked up five ground balls.
Vita led the Big Red with three goals and two assists. Powell had two goals and two helpers, while Meager had two goals and one assist.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it hosts ninth-ranked Washington College for a 1:00 pm contest.
