W&L Men's Lacrosse Downs VWC in ODAC Quarters, 13-8

LEXINGTON, Va. – Just as in the regular season meeting, third-seeded Washington and Lee used a six-goal run across the first and second quarters to secure a 13-8 win over sixth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday evening at Wilson Field.

The Generals (14-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 7:41 of the game on the strength of a goal and an assist from sophomore attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) and goals from senior midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) and sophomore midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville).

Virginia Wesleyan (9-7) scored two straight goals in a span of 34 seconds to cut it to a 3-2 game with 5:16 left in the opening period.  Sophomore attackman Mike Moran (Woolrich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) found the cage off an assist from sophomore attackman Chad Kooser (Ferndale, Md./North County) and senior midfielder Mikey Connors (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) scored off a feed from first-year attackman Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/The Hill Academy).

W&L then began its run at the 4:29 mark as sophomore midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) scored unassisted, and Dabir found the net unassisted 17 seconds later for a 5-2 lead.  The advantage grew to 6-2 before the end of the first quarter when junior midfielder Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y./Chaminade) found the net unassisted at 2:15.

In the second quarter, senior midfielder Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) extended the lead to 7-2 with an unassisted goal at 10:45, and Brown made it 8-2 with a man-down goal at 5:51.  Paglia ended the run with a goal off a Wood assist for a 9-2 lead with 5:00 left in the second quarter.

The Marlins ended the first half with another flurry, scoring a pair of goals in eight seconds to make it a 9-4 game at the half.  Moran cut it to 9-5 with a goal off a Connors assist just 2:14 into the third period, but sophomore attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) scored off an assist from senior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) to push the lead back to five goals (10-5) with 11:50 left in the quarter.

Virginia Wesleyan then produced a three-goal run, featuring one goal and one assist each from Connors and Currier, to make it a 10-8 game entering the fourth period of play.

W&L controlled play in the final period, however, receiving one goal from Dabir and two from Means, to produce the five-goal final score.

The Generals outshot the Marlins, 45-38, and held a 40-30 edge on ground balls.  W&L also won 15-of-24 faceoffs and forced 25 VWC turnovers.  Dabir led the way with three goals and one assist, while Means and Brown had two goals and one helper each.  Paglia scored two goals and Wood finished with one goal and one assist.  Sophomore Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) totaled 13 saves while playing the duration in goal.

Moran paced the Marlins with three goals, while Currier had one goal and three assists.  Connors added two goals and two assists, and senior Corey Bauer (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) stopped 16 shots while playing all 60 minutes in goal.

Washington and Lee advances to the ODAC Semifinals where it will take on second-seeded Lynchburg on Saturday at Roanoke College.  Opening faceoff is slated for 4:00 pm.
