LEXINGTON, Va. – The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-1 lead early in the second quarter and cruised to a 13-9 victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Senior midfielder Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Coventant) got things started for the Generals (6-1, 1-0) just 3:04 into the game when he scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee). Senior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) then scored twice and sophomore midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) scored man-up from Means with 7:16 left in the opening period for a 4-0 lead.
Randolph-Macon (4-5, 0-1) got on the board when first-year attackman Robert Fox (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) scored unassisted at 6:03, but junior midfielder Drew Kenavan (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) scored off a feed from Heinsohn at 4:49 for a 5-1 lead. Junior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) at 3:50 and sophomore attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) scored man-up from junior midfielder Tim Werner (Westfield, N.J./St. Anne's-Belfield) just seven seconds into the second period for the 7-1 lead.
The Yellow Jackets then scored three straight, including two goals from junior midfielder Justin Butler (Ocean City, Md./Worcester Prep), to slice it to a 7-4 game with 4:22 left in the half. The Generals closed the second quarter with two goals in the final 2:54 for a 9-4 lead at the break.
W&L opened the third period with a Goldman goal off an assist from Dabir, but R-MC first-year attackman Ryan Davidson (Logan Township, N.J./Kingsway Regional) scored two straight goals to make it a 10-6 game with 4:45 left in the quarter. Wood scored off an assist from Brown with 4:12 left to make it an 11-6 game heading into the final quarter.
The Yellow Jackets opened the final frame with two straight goals to slice the W&L advantage to 11-8 with 12:23 to play, but Means and senior attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) both scored unassisted to give the Generals a 13-8 lead with 6:58 to play as W&L won its 17th consecutive game against Randolph-Macon.
Means led the Generals with four goals and one assist, while Goldman and Heinsohn each contributed one goal and two assists. Switala and Wood both score two goals and Brown posted two assists. In goal, sophomore Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) notched 10 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Butler and Davidson notched three goals and one assist each to lead the way for the Yellow Jackets. Fox added two goals and sophomore goalkeeper Jordan DeVito (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) posted 14 saves between the pipes.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Mary Washington for a 7:00 pm contest.
