W&L Men's Lax Uses Big 3rd Quarter to Defeat CNU, 12-9
LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee used a seven-goal run in the third quarter to defeat Christopher Newport, 12-9, in men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (2-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just nine seconds into the game when first-year midfielder Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J./Delbarton) won the opening faceoff and scored unassisted. However, the Captains (0-1) retaliated by scoring the game's next three goals to take a 3-1 lead with 11:14 left in the second quarter.
Senior midfielder Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) stopped the run with an unassisted tally at the 2:46 mark, but CNU got the goal back when sophomore midfielder Gregory Limon (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) scored off an assist from first-year attackman Alex Barber (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) just 1:01 later. The Captains extended their lead to 5-2 at the half when junior attackman Aaron Chrzaszcz (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) scored off a feed from junior attackman Billy Crist (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) with just one second left in the half.
Switala jump started the Generals' decisive run when he scored off an assist from junior attackman Sean Gebhard (Fox Point, Wisc./Marquette University School) at the 9:32 mark of the third quarter. Sophomore attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) scored unassisted 1:06 later to make it 5-4, and the found sophomore midfielder Garrett Paglia (Forest Hill, Md./Gilman) for a man-up goal to tie the score with 7:49 left in the period. Junior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) scored unassisted at the 5:26 mark to give W&L the lead and sophomore attackman Tyler Goldman (New York, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee) scored consecutive goals 25 seconds apart to give W&L an 8-5 advantage. Senior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) ended the run with goal off an assist from Dabir with 2:06 left in the period.
Christopher Newport stopped the bleeding with a goal just 31 seconds before the end of the period to make it 9-6, but Wood scored unassisted just 1:48 into the fourth quarter for a 10-6 lead. Sophomore attackman John Thompson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored back-to-back goals to bring the Captains to within 10-8, and Chrzaszcz scored off a Thompson feed to make it a one-goal game (10-9) with 8:29 left to play.
Senior midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) and Means notched unassisted goals 41 seconds apart to give W&L a 12-9 lead with 3:54 left in the game and the Generals ran out the clock for the win.
For the game, W&L had advantages of 46-30 in shots, 38-25 in ground balls and 16-8 on faceoffs. Means scored two goals and had one assist, while Dabir posted one goal and two assists to lead the Generals. Wood, Switala and Goldman all scored two goals. Sophomore Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) played all 60 minutes in goal and produced seven saves.
Thompson led CNU with two goals and one assist, and Chrzaszcz had two goals. Limon and senior midfielder Chase Walton (Burke, Va./Robinso) had one goal and one assist each, while Barber totaled two assists. Senior Andy McGregor (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) played the duration in goal and tallied 12 saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to top-ranked Salisbury for a 3:30 pm contest.
