W&L's Wernecke Selected to Play in North-South Game

PERRY, N.Y. -- The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) has announced the rosters for the 2011 Division III North-South Senior All-Star game, which will be held on Fri., May 27 at 3:00 pm on the campus of Goucher College.

Washington and Lee senior defenseman Austin Wernecke (Lutherville, Md./Boys' Latin) was among 32 individuals and five ODAC players selected to compete for the South squad.

Wernecke receives the honor after earning First Team All-ODAC laurels during the 2011 season. He played in all 17 games with 16 starts and tied for the team lead with 37 ground balls.  He finished second on the team with 25 caused turnovers as the Generals ranked 20th nationally in scoring defense (7.06 GAA). 

For his career, Wernecke played in 64 contests, starting 60 of them.  He totaled 125 ground balls and caused 55 turnovers.

With Wernecke's selection to the 2011 south roster, W&L has now had 108 players chosen to participate in the game since 1942. He is joined on this year's team by Alex Burkhead, Justin Tuma and Drew Manley of Roanoke College, and Cole Hawthorne of Hampden-Sydney.

Washington and Lee finished the 2011 season with a 9-8 overall record and a 5-2 ODAC mark. The Generals advanced to the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament before falling to Lynchburg College, 9-7.
