W&L Men's Lax Runs Past Greensboro, 14-5

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Washington and Lee scored six straight goals over the second and third periods en route to posting a 14-5 victory over Greensboro College in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Pride Field.

Greensboro (5-10) took a 3-2 lead with 2:52 left in the first period on an unassisted goal by Phil Schmid.  The Generals (8-7) then began their six-goal flurry with 9:39 left in the second quarter when sophomore attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored off a feed from senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) to tie that game at 3-3.  W&L took the lead for good just 16 seconds later when sophomore attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) found the net off an assist from Switala. Means scored again at 4:51 to give W&L a 5-3 lead at halftime.

Washington and Lee continued its run following the intermission when first-year midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) scored unassisted just 1:32 into the third period and first-year midfielder Jared Mitchell (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) gave the Generals a 7-3 lead when he scored off a Means assist just six seconds after Wood's goal.  First-year attackman Connor Smithson (Cary, N.C./Cary Academy) ended the run with a rebound goal at the 6:31 mark of the third period for an 8-3 lead.  First-year attackman Sean Gebhard (Fox Point, Wis./Marquette University School) tallied a pair of goals in the fourth quarter as W&L pulled away for its 10th-straight win in the all-time series against the Pride.

Means and Switala led the Generals with two goals and two assists each, while Gebhard posted two goals.  Senior Ned Lundvall (Richmond, Va./Gilman) played the first 54:38 in goal and notched nine saves against four goals allowed.  Senior Jason Lumpkin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) played the final 5:12 and had three saves with one goal allowed.

Jose Rodriguez paced Greensboro with two goals, while Bill Blakely assisted on four of the five goals for the Pride.  Mitchell Kanowicz played a majority of the time in goal for Greensboro, recording 17 saves with 12 goals allowed.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Randolph-Macon for a 1:00 pm contest.
