Middlebury Downs W&L Men's Lax, 6-5

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Seventh-ranked Middlebury held Washington and Lee to just one goal over the final three quarters in producing a 6-5 victory over the Generals in men's lacrosse action on Tuesday evening at Georgetown University.

The Generals (6-5) opened the scoring at 11:22 of the first quarter when sophomore attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant).

Middlebury (4-1) scored its first goal just 10 seconds later when senior midfielder Alex Giammarco (Medfield, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) found the net unassisted, and then assumed a 2-1 lead on an unassisted tally by junior midfielder Peter Jennings (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) just six seconds after that.

W&L then reeled off three-straight goals in the final 9:23 of the first quarter for a 4-2 lead entering the second period.  Senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) scored man-up from sophomore attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy), while Switala (7:47) and Means (3:41) both scored unassisted.

The Panthers climbed to within 4-3 when sophomore attackman Mike Giordano (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored unassisted 4:21 into the second quarter, but the Generals took a 5-3 lead on an unassisted score by senior midfielder Drew Koeneman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) at the 7:53 mark of the second quarter.

That would be W&L's final goal of the game as the Panthers strung together a trio of goals over the final 16:58 for their fourth-straight win in the series.  Senior midfielder Andrew Conner (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) scored unassisted at 1:58 of the third quarter and junior attackman Tim Cahill (Glastonbury, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) drew Middlebury even at 9:24 of the fourth quarter with a goal off a Giordano assist.  Sophomore midfielder Erich Pfeffer (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) then scored the game-winner with 6:38 left when he found the net man-up from Pfeffer.

Washington and Lee had several attempts for the tie in the final minutes, but the best scoring chance, a point-blank shot by sophomore midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) with just under 20 seconds remaining was turned away by Middlebury senior goalkeeper Ryan Deane (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett School) to preserve the one-goal win.

Middlebury held a 42-26 advantage in shots and won 10-of-15 faceoffs.

Switala led the Generals with two goals, while Means had one goal and one assist.  Senior goalkeeper Jason Lumpkin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) was spectacular in goal, recording 14 saves.

Middlebury was paced by Giordano, who posted one goal and two helpers.  Deane recorded nine saves between the pipes.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Randolph College for a 1:00 pm contest.
