W&L Men's Lax Eludes 16th-Ranked Lynchburg, 4-3
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee defense forced 30 turnovers and allowed just three goals in posting a 4-3 victory over 16th-ranked Lynchburg in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf field.
The Generals (6-4, 3-0) allowed just one goal in the second quarter and two in the third, holding the Hornets (4-5, 0-2) scoreless for the final 15:16 of the game in winning their fourth-straight contest.
W&L opened the scoring at the 6:15 mark of the first period when senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley). LC drew even with 5:42 left in the second period when sophomore midfielder Max Voumard (Cape May, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) scored unassisted, but the Generals pushed back in the lead just 2:35 later on an unassisted tally by junior attackman Scott Meehan (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill) for a 2-1 advantage at the break.
The Hornets again knotted the game at 2-2 with 8:57 left in the third period on a transition goal by sophomore long-stick midfielder Joseph Lisicky (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville), but the Generals had the answer when Means scored unassisted just 3:00 later.
W&L suffered four penalties in the final 3:27 of the third quarter and maintained the lead through three of them, including surviving a two man-down situation with 1:39 left in the quarter, but the Hornets eventually tied it on a man-up goal by sophomore attackman Derek Sweet (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) off an assist from junior attackman Dylan Hoff (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) with 16 seconds remaining in the third quarter to knot the score at 3-3.
The Generals then took the lead for good with 12:31 left in the game when sophomore attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored the game-winner man-up off a feed from Meehan. From there, senior goalkeeper Jason Lumpkin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) would turn back two shots, including one from point-blank range with just over a minute remaining, to make the lead stand up.
For the game, W&L held a 28-25 advantage in shots, while Lynchburg posted a 29-25 edge in ground balls and dominated the faceoff X, winning 10-of-11 draws. However, the Generals had just 17 turnovers in the contest, including just six following the halftime break.
Means and Meehan led the W&L offense with one goal and one assist each, while sophomore Joe LaSala (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) paced the defense with five caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. Lumpkin posted 10 saves in net.
Voumard, Sweet and Lisicky all scored for the Hornets, while junior Franc Cook (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) logged 13 saves in goal.
