Denison Upends W&L Men's Lax, 10-6
GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison University jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back in claiming a 10-6 victory over Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse on Sunday afternoon at Deeds Field.
The 15th-ranked Big Red (2-0) opened a 2-0 lead just 4:50 into the game on goals by first-year midfielder Chapin Speidel and senior attackman Kyle Brown. The Generals (1-3) countered with a goal by sophomore attackman Jack Switala (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) off an assist from senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) with 5:47 to play in the opening period.
Two goals by Colin Molloy and another by Brown keyed a four-goal spurt over the next 23:52, giving Denison a 6-1 lead with 11:55 left in the third quarter.
Switala scored unassisted with 9:43 left in the quarter, but a goal by senior attackman Emmett Jones off a feed from junior midfielder Alex Hardt just 57 seconds later gave the Big Red a 7-2 advantage.
Washington and Lee scored four of the game's next five goals, including a pair by senior midfielder Mark Wachmeister (Wellesley, Mass./Belmont Hill) and another by Switala, to make it an 8-6 game with 8:58 remaining. However, Jones scored again with 2:28 left and Brown notched his third goal of the day with 18 seconds remaining for the final margin.
Switala paced the Generals with three goals, while Wachmeister notched a pair of tallies. Junior attackman Sam Mott (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) also scored, while Daw had one assist. Senior Jason Lumpkin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded five saves.
Denison, which scored its 10 goals on just 26 shots, was led by Brown's three goals. Senior midfielder Tanner Smith had three assists, while Jones and Malloy posted two goals each. Junior attackman Cory Couture chipped in a pair of assists. Junior Gregg Shannon played the duration in goal, logging six saves.
