LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team forced 43 turnovers and outshot Ferrum by a count of 70-10 in posting an 18-4 win over the Panthers in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday evening at Wilson Field.
The Generals (1-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening 5:57 of the game before first-year attackman Andrew Senft (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) found the net for Ferrum at the 8:43 mark, scoring the first goal in the history of the Panthers' lacrosse program which is celebrating its inaugural season.
The win also marked the 100th career victory for W&L Head Coach Gene McCabe, who is 100-40 (.714) in 10 seasons, 46-22 at W&L (.677).
Ferrum cut its deficit to 3-2 with 6:13 left in the first quarter on a man-up goal by first-year attackman David Rosenberger (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield), but W&L junior attackman Sam Mott (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) scored with 41 seconds left in the first period to give W&L a 4-2 lead.
Rosenberger scored another man-up goal just 22 seconds into the second period to make it 4-3, but the Generals closed the half with a 5-goal run, courtesy of goals by five different players, en route to a 9-3 lead at the break.
Washington and Lee continued its pressure on the Panthers following the intermission, scoring eight-straight goals over the third and fourth period, including a pair by junior attackman Scott Meehan (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Manlius-Pebble Hill), for a commanding 17-3 lead with 7:57 left in the game in cruising to the win.
The Generals held a 46-29 advantage on ground balls and won 16-of-25 faceoffs in the game. Meanwhile, Ferrum was successful on just 11 of its 31 clear attempts.
Meehan led W&L with four goals and sophomore midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) had two goals and one assist. Senior attackman Spence Daw (Phoenix, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) registered one goal and two assists, while Mott, senior midfielders Drew Koeneman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) and Gerard Savarese (Lutherville, Md./Loyola-Blakefield), and sophomore attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) had two goals each.
Seniors Ned Lundvall (Richmond, Va./Gilman) and Jason Lumpkin (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) both played in goal for the Generals, with Lundvall starting the first 42:27 and allowing three goals with no saves. Lumpkin played the final 17:33, posting one save and allowing one goal.
Senft and Rosenberger both scored a pair of goals for the Panthers. Sophomore Josh Liptak started and played the first 46:14 of the game, notching 18 saves with 14 goals allowed. First-year Damian Pulos played the final 13:46 and had nine saves with four goals allowed.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Wittenberg for a 1:00 pm contest.
