SALEM, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) released its 2010 Preseason Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Poll on Wednesday afternoon and Washington and Lee was selected third among the conference’s eight lacrosse members.
Roanoke College topped the poll with all eight first-place votes and 64 total points. Lynchburg College was second with 52 points and was followed by W&L (51), Hampden-Sydney (41), Randolph-Macon (32), Virginia Wesleyan (21), Guilford (18) and Randolph (9).
Washington and Lee returns five starters and 33 letterwinners from last season’s team that claimed the ODAC Championship with a 15-14 overtime victory over the previously unbeaten Maroons in the title contest. The Generals completed the season with a 16-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in the ODAC regular season, eventually falling to national runner-up Gettysburg College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, 15-10.
Headlining the returnees for W&L is senior attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman), who earned First Team All-ODAC and Honorable Mention All-America honors a year ago. Keigler led the team in scoring with 78 points on 42 goals and 36 assists and enters his senior season tied for 16th on the school’s career scoring list with 149 points.
Senior defenseman Tyler Smith (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) and junior defenseman Tad Baker (Towson, Md./Towson) also return after earning all-conference laurels in 2009. Smith was a second team selection after notching 48 ground balls and 47 caused turnovers, while Baker garnered honorable mention honors with 40 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.
The Generals will look to open the 2010 campaign on the road at Birmingham Southern (7:00 CST) on Feb. 23 and at Sewanee (4:00 CST) on Feb. 24.
