Rick Werner is in his second stint as an assistant coach with the Washington and Lee golf programs. He also served as an assistant coach from 2007-11, helping lead the Generals' men's team to a pair of ODAC Championships.
Werner's first season in 2007-08 resulted in the Generals
winning their first ODAC title since 1999 and producing their first
trip to the NCAA Championships since 1991. The team finished
16th overall at the NCAA Division III Championships. W&L
repeated as ODAC Champions in 2008-09 and eventually finished 17th
Werner has been a Class "A" member of the Professional Golfers Association of America (PGA) since 1976 and, most recently, he served as the Director of Golf Operations at the Royal Poinciana Golf Club in Naples, Fla., from 1980-2003. Werner also served as the head golf professional at the Country Club of Ashland (Ohio) from 1978-80, was a teaching professional at the Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y. (1975-77) and Marco Island Country Club in Marco Island, Fla. (1976-77) and he was an assistant golf professional at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, Fla., from 1974-75.
Werner was an All-America golfer at the University of South Dakota, where he earned a bachelor of science in history in 1973. He finished in the Top 10 at the 1984 National Club Pro Championship and he was a participant in the 1983 and 1985 PGA Championship events.
