COLUMBUS, Ohio – The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee men's golf team finished eighth out of 13 teams at the Gordin Collegiate Classic hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at the Columbus Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
Illinois Wesleyan, also ranked fifth in the latest Division III poll, won the event by six strokes with a -14 score of 285-278-287—850. Top-ranked Emory finished second overall, shooting a 286-291-279—856 (-8), while the Generals amassed a score of 291-289-307--887 (+23).
W&L junior Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) was in contention for his third straight individual title, but ended up in a tie for 10th with a -1 score of 73-67-75—215 (-1). IWU's Rob Wuethrich finished as the medalist with a -7 score of 69-71-69—209.
Junior Boyd Peete (Henrico, Va. / St. Christopher's) placed in a tie for 20th out of 70 golfers with a 72-72-75—219 (+3), while junior Sean Puleo (Albany, N.Y. / Albany Academy) carded a 73-73-78—224 (+8) that tied for 34th overall.
Sophomore Evans Copeland (West Point, Ga. / Brookstone School) and senior George May (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet) both tied for 55th overall. Copeland shot 73-81-79—233 (+17), while May posted 75-77-81—233 (+17).
Washington and Lee returns to action on October 22-23 when it competes in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial hosted by Guilford at the Sedgefield Dye Course in Greensboro, N.C.
