FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its 2014 Men's Golf Preseason Coaches Poll on Friday and Washington and Lee was picked to finished third out of the 10 golf playing schools.
Guilford, three-time defending conference champions, topped the poll with eight first-place votes and 80 points. Hampden-Sydney followed with two first-place tallies and 74 points, while the Generals totaled 61 points. Bridgewater was fourth with 60 points and was followed by Roanoke (47), Shenandoah (38), Randolph-Macon (35), Virginia Wesleyan (25), Lynchburg (19) and Eastern Mennonite (11).
The Generals are coming off a solid fall season that saw them average 303.0 strokes over eight rounds played. W&L tied for second at the Virginia Intercollegiate in October and the Generals placed fourth at last season's ODAC Championship.
Sophomore Teddy Corcoran (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) is back after earning First Team All-ODAC laurels last spring, while junior Patrick Clossin (Ooltewah, Tenn. / McCallie School) also returns after garnering Third Team All-ODAC honors a year ago. Corcoran averaged 76.3 strokes per round this fall, while Clossin posted a 75.6 scoring average.
First-year Conley Hurst (Little Rock, Ark. / Episcopal) also had a fine fall, leading the team and ranking fifth in the ODAC with a 74.3 scoring average. First-years Cody Solomon (Peachtree Corners, Ga. / Wesleyan School) and Todd Alan McDonald (Little Rock, Ark. / Little Rock Christian), and junior Joey Manzinger (Baden, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) rounded out the Generals' top competitors this fall. Solomon posted a 76.8 average, McDonald notched a 77.0 average and Manzinger averaged 81.1 strokes per round.
Washington and Lee will begin its spring season on March 1-2 at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate hosted by Berry College at the Mountain Course in Pine Mountain, Ga. The ODAC Championships will be held on April 27-29 at Rock Barn Golf Club in Conover, N.C.
