Roanoke Knocks off W&L Men's Basketball, 69-62
SALEM, Va. – Washington and Lee saw a five-game winning streak against Roanoke snapped with a 69-62 loss to the Maroons on Wednesday evening at the Bast Center.
The Generals (5-13, 2-7) trailed 16-14 with 9:16 left in the first half, but used a 10-0 run over the next 4:50 to take a 24-16 lead at the 4:26 mark of the opening stanza. The Maroons (8-9, 2-7) then held the Generals scoreless for the remainder of the half, eventually knotting the score at 24-24 heading into the halftime break.
Senior center Drew Kimberly (Fairfield, Conn. / Fairfield Ludlowe) gave W&L the lead back with a jumper just 12 seconds into the second half and the lead changed hands five more times before the Maroons claimed the lead for good on a pair of free throws by junior forward Daniel Eacho at the 15:18 mark.
W&L remained within two possession of pulling even until six straight points from Eacho stretched the Roanoke advantage to eight points (55-47) with 5:53 remaining in the game. The Generals got no closer than six points the rest of the way as the Maroons hit 10-of-16 free throws in the final 2:21 of the contest.
The Generals, who are in the midst of a five-game losing streak, were led by junior guard Clay McLean's (Charlotte, N.C. / Davidson Day) career-high tying 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the foul line. Sophomore guard Darren Douglas (Elmsford, N.Y. / Rye Country Day) scored a season-best 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, while Kimberly added eight points and five rebounds.
Roanoke held a 45-21 advantage on the glass by grabbing 17 offensive rebounds. The Maroons were led by Eacho, who tallied 24 points and 14 rebounds. Junior forward Andrew Daniels scored 18 points and sophomore forward Cameron Smith chipped in four points and 10 boards.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Bridgewater for a 2:00 pm contest.
