Generals Cruise to 87-48 Victory over Cairn
LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team totaled 43 bench points on Sunday in an 87-48 victory over Cairn in the opening game of the W&L Holiday Tournament at the Warner Center. The 39-point win was the largest margin of victory for the Generals (4-5) this year.
Senior center Drew Kimberly (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) led the team with 17 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) added 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
W&L led from start to finish, as it held the Highlanders (0-8) to 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field. Cairn also finished the game 2-of-23 (8.7 percent) from behind the arc.
The Blue and White led 11-9 after 8:22 of play, and then went on a 10-2 run to stretch the advantage to 10 (21-11) with 7:37 left in the half. During the spurt, Kimberly scored four points and Franz and senior guard Kevin Gill (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) nailed triples.
Over the final seven minutes of the half, W&L outscored the Highlanders, 19-9, to take 20-point lead, 40-20, into intermission. At the break, Kimberly already had 15 of his 17 points, and Franz had netted 13.
In the second half, the reserves took over as they scored 37 of the team's 47 points on the way to the 87-48 win. For the contest, 17 of the team's 18 players saw at least four minutes of action, and 15 players scored.
Four Generals netted their first collegiate points led by sophomore guard Franklin Wolfe (Raleigh, N.C./Sanderson) with nine. Joining Wolfe with their first tallies were first-year guard Austin Piatt (Vandalia, Ohio/Chaminade Julienne) with three, first-year forward Peter Rathmell (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) with two and first-year forward Ryan McDonnell (Morristown, N.J./Newark Academy) with two.
W&L shot 53.3 percent (32-of-60) from the field, 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from long range and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the charity stripe. The Generals won the rebounding battle, 39-31, and had 21 assists compared to just 10 turnovers.
First-year guard Obed Rivera (Rockville, Md./Rockville) led Cairn with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Reuben Lacy (Upper Darby, Pa./Homeschool) and first-year guard JD Zamroz (Perkasie, Pa./Faith Christian) each notched nine points.
The Generals will play fifth-ranked Williams in the championship of the Holiday Tournament on Monday at 4:00 pm. Williams defeated Washington College on Sunday, 84-76.
