W&L Men's Basketball Picked Eighth in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2012-13 men’s basketball preseason coaches’ poll on Thursday, and Washington and Lee was picked to finish in a tie for eighth with Bridgewater out of 12 schools with 54 points.

Defending league champion Randolph-Macon garnered the top spot with 8 of the 12 first-place votes and 117 points. Hampden-Sydney was second with 114 points and the remaining four first-place votes. Virginia Wesleyan was tabbed third (102), Guilford (91) was fourth and Randolph (66) rounded out the Top 5.

Lynchburg was picked sixth (64) and Eastern Mennonite was selected seventh at 62 points. Following W&L and Bridgewater were Roanoke (30), Emory & Henry (22) and Shenandoah (16).

The Generals return 10 players, including three starters, from the 2012-13 team that went 13-13 overall and 7-7 in the ODAC. Sophomore forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) returns as the team’s leading scorer (11.8 points per game) and was the ODAC and VaSID Rookie of the Year last season. Franz became just the second player in W&L history to garner the honor.

Along with Franz, W&L returns senior guard Kevin Gill (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) and senior forward Drew Kimberly (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe). Gill averaged 7.4 ppg, while shooting 41.6 percent from behind the arc, and Kimberly led the team in field goal percentage at 56.5 percent.

Head coach Adam Hutchinson returns for his 11th season at the helm of the Generals and has the second-most victories in the history of the program with 112.

W&L opens the season against Ferrum on November 16 at 6:00 pm, as part of the W&L Tip-Off Tournament.
