Franz Earns VaSID Rookie of the Year Honor

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its 2012-13 College Division Men's Basketball All-State Team on Monday, and first-year Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) was named the Rookie of the Year.

Franz becomes the first General to receive the honor, after being only the second W&L player to garner the ODAC Rookie of the Year award earlier this year. In his first season, Franz played in 25 of the team's 26 games, including 14 starts. He averaged 11.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He shot 46.6 percent (111-238) from the field, 38.5 percent (30-78) from behind the arc and 66.2 percent (43-65) from the charity stripe.

In conference contests, he upped his numbers to 13.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Franz tallied a season-high and team-high 27 points in a 74-44 home victory over Emory & Henry on February 6. He also totaled a season-high eight rebounds three times and a season-high seven assists twice.

Senior guard Colton Hunt of Randolph was named the Player of the Year and Clay Nunley of Randolph earned the Coach of the Year honor.
