Three Generals Earn Weekly Accolades
SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee University garnered the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference's athlete of the week honors for the
sports of field hockey, women's soccer and golf for the week ending
October 26.
Junior forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) was
named the ODAC field hockey player of the week, while senior
forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall)
garnered the weekly award for women's soccer and junior Robert
Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) received the accolade for men's
golf. This honor marks the second time this year for all three
athletes.
Armstrong led the Generals to a 2-1 record last week. She tallied
four first-half goals in a 5-1 win over Sweet Briar on Saturday,
including the fastest goal ever scored in W&L history (22
seconds). Additionally, she notched two goals and dished out the
game-winning assist as the Generals upset No. 17 Christopher
Newport, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday. Armstrong is now second
all-time at W&L in career points (91) and career goals
(38).
Van Devender notched four goals and three assists to help lead the
Washington and Lee women’s soccer team to two ODAC victories
over the week. She recorded two goals and two assists in a 10-0
shutout over Emory & Henry on Wednesday, while notching a
team-high six points on two goals and two assists in a 5-0 victory
over ODAC-foe Guilford on Saturday. With her performance last week,
she now ranks second all-time at W&L in career goals (60),
career assists (33) and career points (153).
Womble led the golf team to a first-place finish out of 11 teams in
the McDaniel Fall Invitational held last Sunday and Monday at the
Piney Branch Golf Club in Hampstead, Md. He was the individual
medalist after shooting an even-par score of 71-71--142.
