CHANDLER, Ariz. — The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced its 2013 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad and the recipients of the national Academic Team Award recently. Washington and Lee garnered the team award, and placed 16 players on the academic squad. It is the most players to earn the accolade for W&L since 16 were named in 2009.
Among the 16 honorees for the Generals, seniors Riley Hampsch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) and Victoria Van Natten (Towson, Md./Towson) earned the recognition for the fourth time. Senior Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) and junior Mary Virginia Long (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) made the team for the third time.
Sophomores Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) and Emily Doran (Somers, Conn./Suffield Academy) received the honor for the second time, while juniors Caroline Andress (Charlotte, N.C./Episcopal) and Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) earned a spot on the team for the first time.
First-years Allie Barry (Beverly, Mass./Brooks School), Camilla Davis (Richmond, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School), Callie Taylor (New Canaan, Conn./Portsmouth Abbey School), Kendall Peterson (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Lydia Ruhlin (Darien, Conn./Darien), Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School), Carter Ware (Middleburg, Va./Foxcroft School) and Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) all received the accolade in their first seasons.
To be named to the squad, a player must have earned at least a cumulative 3.30 GPA through the fall term. In order to be recognized as a National Academic Team, the institutions had to achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the fall term. The Generals were one of 121 teams honored.
