W&L Field Hockey Falls at Shenandoah, 4-3

WINCHESTER, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored two goals in the final seven minutes but it wasn't enough, as they lost at Shenandoah on Thursday, 4-3. Junior forward Ashley Cross led the Hornets (7-9, 3-2 ODAC), scoring three of the team's four goals.

The Generals (3-12, 2-4 ODAC) entered the second half trailing, 4-1. With 6:35 left in the game, junior midfielder Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) cut the deficit to 3-2 on her third goal of the season. Just 1:59 later, first-year forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) closed the gap to one, 4-3, off an assist from sophomore forward Charlotte MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft).

The Hornets' defense responded and held W&L without a shot in the final 4:36. For the contest, the Blue and White led in shots, 13-12, while Shenandoah held the advantage in penalty corners, 9-6.

Senior Sarah Clare started in goal for the Hornets, making seven saves and allowing one goal in 60:21. Sophomore Katelyn Gregory subbed in for the final 9:39 and gave up two goals and stopped one shot.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sally Curtiss (Morristown, N.J./Madison) started for the Generals, and she recorded one save and gave up four goals in 35 minutes. Sophomore Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) came in for the second half and made three saves in 35 minutes.

Cross scored her first goal of the game to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead at the 2:51 mark. W&L tied the game just two minutes later on MacDonald's third tally of the year. Cross registered Shenandoah's next two goals to push the lead to 3-1, and first-year midfielder Alexa Lapp extended the advantage to 4-1 with one minute remaining in the opening half.

The Generals host Centre on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
