Hawks Edge W&L Field Hockey, 2-1

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — Junior midfielder Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) scored her second goal of the season, but the Washington and Lee field hockey team lost, 2-1, at St. Mary's (Md.) on Sunday.

The Hawks (4-2) scored the game-winning goal eight minutes into the second half. Off a penalty corner, junior forward Olivia Edwards passed it to first-year forward Brady Wolf who put the ball into the back of the cage.

Sophomores Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) and Sally Curtiss (Morristown, N.J./Madison) split time at goalkeeper for the Generals (1-7). Axelrod played the entire first half, making four saves and allowing one goal. Curtiss stopped one shot in the second half and gave up the tally to Wolf. Junior goalkeeper Christy Bishop played all 70 minutes for the Hawks, and made three saves in the victory.

St. Mary's recorded the game's first goal in the 21st minute on senior midfielder Claire Kortyna's third score of the season. Sophomore midfielder Emily Smithers was credited with the assist on the goal. W&L tied the game six minutes later when Purpura converted a penalty stroke.

The Hawks took 13 shots in the contest compared to five for the Blue and White. St. Mary's also led in penalty corners, 11-7.

The Generals travel to Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm game.
