W&L Field Hockey Loses to No. 6 Mary Washington, 7-0
FREDRICKSBURG, Va. — The sixth-ranked Mary Washington field hockey team scored five first-half goals on its way to a 7-0 victory over Washington and Lee on Thursday.
Defender Kathleen Namey scored the first two goals for the Eagles (3-0), and midfielder Caitlin Baker and forward Christine Loehr each had one goal and two assists.
Sophomores Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) and Sally Curtiss (Morristown, N.J./Madison) split time at goalkeeper for the Generals (1-2). Axelrod played 13:11 and finished with six saves, after allowing four goals. Curtiss made eight saves in 51:32, and W&L played the final five minutes with 11 field players.
Senior defender Riley Hampsch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) made a defensive save for the Generals in the final two minutes. Goalkeeper Emily Badis played the first 60 minutes to earn the victory for Mary Washington.
UMW led in shots, 28-2, while first-year forward Maggie Waxter's (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) took the Blue and White's lone shot on goal. The Eagles also held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners.
W&L will take a day off before traveling to York (Pa.) on Saturday for a 2:15 pm game.
