CHANDLER, Ariz. — The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced its 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad and the recipients of the National Academic Team Award recently. Washington and Lee garnered the team award, and placed seven players on the academic squad.
Among the seven honorees for the Generals, juniors Riley Hampsch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) and Victoria Van Natten (Towson, Md./Towson) earned the recognition for the third time. Joining the three-time recipients were juniors Alex Hensleigh (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) and Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate), sophomore Mary Virginia Long (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and first-years Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) and Emily Duran (Somers, Conn./Suffield Academy).
To be named to the squad, a player must have maintained at least a cumulative 3.30 GPA through the fall term. In order to be recognized as a National Academic Team, the institutions had to achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the fall term. The Generals were one of 120 teams honored.
