W&L Field Hockey Suffers 5-1 Loss to No. 7 Christopher Newport

LEXINGTON, Va. — The seventh-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team scored three goals in a five-minute stretch en route to a 5-1 victory over Washington and Lee at the W&L Turf Field on Sunday.

The Captains (14-1) held a 2-0 advantage over the Generals (6-10) midway through the second half and used the three-goal scoring barrage to put the game away. Sophomore Belle Tunstall (Vienna, Va./James Madison) pushed the lead to 3-0 off an assist from junior defender Kelsey Clark (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee) at 54:56.

Less than two minutes later, CNU stretched the lead to four, off a goal from senior forward Lindsay Hendricks (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory). Junior forward Marlene Lichty (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) brought the ball down the left end line, and made a pass into the center of the circle to Hendricks. Hendricks quickly redirected it past a sliding Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) for the score.

Christopher Newport scored its final tally of the game three minutes later (59:06) when senior midfielder Caitlin Cahill (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) scored her second goal of the game.

W&L recorded its lone goal with 8:36 left in the contest. First-year forward Claire Townsley (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) stole the ball from a defender inside the striking circle, and quickly turned and fired a shot that found the back of the cage. It was the fourth goal of the year for Townsley.

Kyne played the full 70 minutes in goal for the Generals, making 15 saves. Senior Jamie Dowling (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) started at goalkeeper for the Captains and played 59:06, making one save. Junior Julie Collins (Oxford, Pa./Saint Marks) played the final 10:54, allowing one goal without a save.

Christopher Newport outshot the W&L, 26-3, and held a 16-0 advantage in penalty corners.

It was Senior Day for Washington and Lee, and the team honored Kyne and midfielder Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forrest) for their accomplishments in the last four years.

The Generals play their final regular season game on Wednesday, October 24, at Bridgewater at 4:00 pm.
