Randolph-Macon Stymies W&L Field Hockey, 1-0
ASHLAND, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Friday, and suffered a 1-0 defeat at Randolph-Macon. The loss dropped the Generals to 2-5 overall.
The Yellow Jackets (2-6, 1-0 ODAC) scored the only goal of the game on a penalty corner. Sophomore defender Carrie Jacobs took the corner and passed the ball to junior defender Olivia Newman. Newman received the pass, and then beat first-year goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) for the score.
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Woodworth earned the shutout for Randolph-Macon with six saves. It was her second consecutive shutout after making seven saves in an overtime victory at Wilson on September 19.
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Generals, 25-6, and had 19 penalty corners compared to three for W&L. Junior midfielder Iziar Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity) led the team in shots with two.
Axelrod took the loss for the Generals, playing 55:50 minutes. She stopped 11 of the 12 shots she faced. Senior goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) played the final 14:10 for W&L, making four saves.
Washington and Lee next plays at Roanoke on Tuesday, September 25, at 4:00 pm.
