W&L Field Hockey Blanks Transylvania, 5-0, for First Win
SEWANEE, TENN. — Playing its second and final game at the Sewanee Invitational, the Washington and Lee field hockey team shutout Transylvania, 5-0, in a neutral-site contest on Saturday.
The win marked the Generals (1-1) first victory of the season, while the Pioneers lost their season-opening game. W&L scored three goals in the first half and two in the second.
The Blue and White took a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the first when junior defender Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) knocked in her first goal of the year. Sophomore forward Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) followed with a score four minutes later to give the team a 2-0 advantage.
With the clock winding down in the first half, first-year forward Claire Townsley (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) pushed the lead to 3-0 off an assist from Boone. In the second half, sophomore midfielder Anna Kathryn Barnes (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) recorded her first goal of the season with 9:37 left in the game. Junior forward Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) registered the team's final goal with 3:24 remaining on the clock to secure the 5-0 victory.
Senior Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) earned her first shutout of the season, while making 12 saves. Despite allowing five goals, senior goalkeeper Sara Aschbacher made 19 saves for Transylvania.
