SEWANEE, Tenn. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team lost at Sewanee on Friday, 2-1, in the season-opener for both teams.
W&L notched the first score of the game, 9:47 into the first half, on an own goal by the Sewanee defense. The Tigers tied the game a little over a minute later. Junior midfielder Mary Kate McAlister made an entry pass to senior forward Anne Brooke who then beat the Generals' senior goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven).
Just under two minutes later, Sewanee took the lead when senior forward Cameron Herndon recorded her first score of the season, unassisted, to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.
Neither team marked a tally in the second half. W&L took six shots on goal after intermission, but senior Anna Morrow, the Sewanee goalkeeper, stopped all six. Despite allowing two goals in less than two minutes, Kyne made 11 saves in the game, playing all 70 minutes.
W&L finished with 10 shots on goal with the Tigers taking nine. Senior midfielder Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and junior forward Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) tied for the team lead with four shots.
The Generals return to the field on Saturday, when they take on Transylvania in Sewanee, Tenn. at 1 pm EDT. It will be the first game of the season for the Pioneers.
