W&L Field Hockey Picked Fifth in ODAC Preseason Poll

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2012 field hockey preseason coaches’ poll on Wednesday, and Washington and Lee was tabbed fifth in the league with 34 points.

Defending league champion Lynchburg garnered the top spot with eight of the nine first-place votes and 64 points. Randolph-Macon received the other first-place vote and 56 points to take the second spot. Eastern Mennonite was picked third (45) and Virginia Wesleyan took fourth (42). Following W&L was Bridgewater (30), Shenandoah (24), Roanoke (21) and Sweet Briar (8).

The Generals return 13 players from last year’s team, and add seven first-year athletes. In 2011, the squad finished 6-10 overall and 2-6 in the ODAC.

The team’s top goal scorer last season, sophomore forward Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga), returns after tallying five goals and one assist in her first season. In the midfield, W&L will rely on senior captain Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and junior Iziar Moure (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity).

Senior captain Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) and junior captain Riley Hampsch (Hopedale, Mass./Hopedale) will anchor the defense. A goalkeeper, Kyne returns after posting 73 saves, a .723 save percentage and a 2.55 goals-against average last season. She had the fourth-best save percentage in the ODAC last year. Hampsch, a defender, earned Third Team All-ODAC honors in 2011, after starting all 16 games.

The Generals open the season at Sewanee on Friday, August 31, at 3:00 pm.
