LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team built 2-0 halftime lead en route to a 3-1 win over visiting Sewanee on Monday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
W&L (6-8), which outshot Sewanee (4-7) 14-1 in the first half, got on the board at the 13:31 mark when junior Katelyn Daugherty (Chester, Va./Governor's School) found first-year Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) open in front of the cage for Stefanic's fourth goal of the season.
Late in the first half, senior Lindsey Edmonds (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) fed a ball to senior Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross), who beat Sewanee junior Anna Morrow (Annapolis, Md./St. James) for a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
In the second half, the Tigers trimmed their deficit to 2-1 when first-year Zuie Billings (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) sent a long cross into the arc that senior Elise Landau (Wernersville, Pa./Lancaster Country Day) deflected past W&L junior Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) at the 40:01 mark.
Sewanee kept up the offensive pressure in the final 35:00 minutes earning six penalty corners in the second half, but W&L first-year Anna Kathryn Barnes (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) found sophomore Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) wide open on the back post for an insurance goal at the 62:39 mark and the Generals held on for their sixth win of the season.
Kyne played all 70:00 in the cage for W&L and made three saves with just the one goal allowed. Morrow also played the duration for Sewanee and made 11 saves as the Tigers were outshot 27-7 on the game. Sophomore Tilden Davis (Wilmington, Del./St. Andrew's) added a defensive save for the Tigers.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host Roanoke at 6:00 pm.
