Yellow Jackets Sting W&L Football, 27-21

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior running back Will McGhee ran for 189 yards and four touchdowns to lead Randolph-Macon to a 27-21 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Day Field.

The Generals (3-3, 1-2) trailed 14-0 at halftime, but chipped away at the R-MC (5-1, 3-0) lead, eventually tying the game at 21-21 with 9:16 to play in the fourth quarter.  Senior running back Luke Terna (Wheaton, Ill./Benet Academy) knotted the game with a 5-yard touchdown run, capping a 13-play, 83-yard drive.

Randolph-Macon took the lead back on the next possession, driving 66 yards on 11-plays and eating 5:50 off the game clock.  McGhee ended the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 3:26 left in the game.  The ensuing PAT was wide, giving the Generals a chance to win the game with a touchdown and extra point.

W&L moved it to its own 37-yardline with just under two minutes remaining, but senior quarterback Nick Lombardo (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) fumbled two yards short of a first down on a 3rd-and-9 play and the Yellow Jackets recovered to preserve the 6-point victory.

McGhee got the Yellow Jackets (5-1, 3-0) on the board with a 40-yard touchdown run on their first possession of the ball game.  He then gave R-MC a 14-0 lead heading into the break when he finished an 11-play, 71-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run.

R-MC got the ball to start the second half, but junior quarterback Zac Naccarato was intercepted at the W&L 48-yardline by senior linebacker Mike Palicz (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) four plays into the penultimate quarter.  Lombardo scored on a 12-yard touchdown run seven plays later to make it a 14-7 game.

McGhee scored on a 6-yard touchdown run at the 7:44 mark of the third quarter to make it a 21-7 contest, but W&L first-year running back Connor Chess (Fairfax, Va./Flint Hill) ran the ensuing kickoff back to the R-MC 38-yardline and junior running back Austin Eisenhofer (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) scored on a 3-yard touchdown run play five plays later to make it 21-14 with 5:13 left in the third quarter.

W&L forced a Yellow Jacket punt at the W&L 41-yardline on the next series setting up the drive that resulted in Terna's game-tying touchdown.

The Generals gained 399 yards of total offense led by a career day from Lombardo, who rushed 21 times for 194 yards and one touchdown.  He also completed 6-of-9 passes for 68 yards.  Terna rushed for 84 yards and a score on 14 carries, while Eisenhofer tallied 13 yards and a touchdown rushing, and caught three passes for 34 yards.  On defense, sophomore linebacker Jake Barr (Upper Saddle River, N.J./North Highlands Regional) led the way with a team-best 12 tackles.

Randolph-Macon gained 351 total yards in the contest.  Naccarato supplemented McGhee's effort by completing 14-of-18 passes for 146 yards, while senior wide receiver Christian Cook totaled 57 yards on seven catches.  Sophomore safety Eric Long paced the R-MC defense with 10 tackles.  

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Bridgewater for a 1:30 pm contest.
