W&L's Heinsohn Named 1 of 10 Finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy

LEXINGTON, Va. – Jostens and the J Club of St. John's University have announced the 10 finalists for the 2012 Gagliardi Trophy, which is awarded to Division III football's top student-athlete.  Washington and Lee senior running back Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) is among the finalists.

Heinsohn finished second in Division III in points per game (17.1) and leads all NCAA Divisions with 188 total points, a conference record and the 10th-highest total in Division III history.  He rushed 183 times for 1,253 yards and a school-record 22 touchdowns, hit 48-of-52 PAT attempts and went 2-for-2 on field goal attempts.

Heinsohn's 22 rushing touchdowns this season are an ODAC record, while his 344 career points are a school record and rank second all-time in conference history.  He also amassed a school-record 3,517 career rushing yards during his four seasons.  Heinsohn is the third General to make the list of 10 finalists over the years, joining Robert Hull '96 and Chris Sullivan '02.

A 35-member national selection committee will review the 10 finalists and rank them in order.  Fan balloting will also comprise one of the votes, with the balloting taking place on d3football.com after Thanksgiving.  Four finalists will be invited to a ceremony on December 14 in Salem, Va., two nights before the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.
