MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The D3Football.com All-South Region teams were announced on Tuesday afternoon and Washington and Lee claimed three players across the first and second teams.
Senior running back Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) was selected to the first team, while senior safety Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) and junior offensive tackle Connor Hollenbeck (Alpharetta, Ga./Alpharetta) were both tabbed to the second team.
Heinsohn adds the honor to a wealth of other laurels for the 2012 season, including garnering the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year Award and being named a finalist for the Lanier and Gagliardi Awards, which are presented to the state and national players of the year, respectively.
Heinsohn leads all NCAA Divisions with an ODAC-record 188 total points during the 2012 season. He rushed 183 times for 1,253 yards and a school-record 22 touchdowns, hit 48-of-52 PAT attempts and went 2-for-2 on field goal attempts. A First Team All-ODAC honoree as a sophomore and second team pick as a junior, Heinsohn finished his career as the Generals' all-time leading rusher (3,517) and scorer (344).
A three-time First Team All-ODAC selection and 2011 Honorable Mention All-American, Pelton led the Generals with a career-best 102 tackles, four interceptions and one forced fumble. He completed his career with 282 tackles and 12 interceptions, which are tied for the fifth-best total in school history.
Hollenbeck earned First Team All-ODAC honors in 2012 after posting second team laurels each of his first two seasons. He is part of an offensive line that paved the way for two 1,000-yard rushers and helped the Generals lead Division III in rushing yards per game (363.7). W&L's offense also averaged 431.3 yards and 35.3 points per game in finishing the season 8-3 overall.
Mary Hardin-Baylor claimed the regional offensive and defensive player of the year awards. Senior quarterback LiDarral Bailey received the offensive award, while senior linebacker Javicz Jones received the defensive award. Washington & Jefferson coach Mike Sirianni was named the South Region Coach of the Year.
Washington and Lee won its second ODAC title in the last three seasons and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament before falling to Hobart in the opening round by a score of 38-20.
