FOREST, Va. – Washington and Lee junior cornerback Mitchell Thompson (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Football Player of the Week for the week ending September 15.
Thompson helped the Generals achieve a 34-16 victory over 23rd-ranked Centre College on Saturday by notching a team-best 10 tackles, including nine solo stops. As a team, W&L's defense stopped the Colonels on three of their four attempts on fourth down, with Thompson making a key stop late in the second quarter.
With W&L leading 21-10 and 44 seconds remaining in the half, the Colonels faced a 4th-and-3 from the W&L 25-yardline. Thompson dropped the Centre running back for a 1-yard loss on the play and the Generals ran out the clock to preserve an 11-point lead at the break.
For the season, Thompson is tied for third on the team in tackles with 19 stops, 16 of which have been solo tackles. He also has one pass breakup.
The Generals (2-1) have a bye this Saturday and return to action on September 29 as they travel to Guilford College for a 7:00 pm contest.
