Sutherland and Goetsch Named Top W&L Athletes
Washington and Lee University held its annual Athletic Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 18 at Lee Chapel. Headlining the award winners were senior soccer/track & field athlete Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and senior basketball/track & field athlete Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman), who were selected as the “Pres” Brown Outstanding Senior Female and Male Athletes of the Year as voted on by members of the department.

Washington and Lee University has announced its 23rd class to be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The class includes former basketball coach Verne Canfield, former lacrosse player Don Carroll ’76, former football, lacrosse and wrestling athlete Robert Hull ’96, and former soccer, lacrosse and basketball player Karin Treese Bauer ’99.

Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 176 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Eight Generals Named to All-ODAC Football Teams
The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) announced its 2009 all-conference football teams on Tuesday afternoon and Washington and Lee had eight players honored on the first, second and honorable mention squads. Additionally, junior offensive lineman Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster) was named the Co-ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year winner along with Hampden-Sydney senior linebacker Josh Miller.

Washington and Lee Head Football Coach Frank Miriello is looking for his 2009 team to rebound. After posting four winning seasons and a 26-14 overall record from 2004-07, the Generals dipped to 4-6 during the 2008 campaign. It was just the fourth losing season in Miriello’s 14 years at the helm and the first since 2003.
