LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore shortstop Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) ripped a two-out bases loaded walk-off RBI single to right in the bottom of the ninth in the second game of a doubleheader to give the Washington and Lee baseball team a sweep over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
W&L (12-6, 4-0 ODAC) totaled nine runs on 13 hits to take the first game of the twinbill, 9-1. The Marlins (6-9, 1-3 ODAC) led 5-1 in the second contest, but the Blue and White scored five unanswered runs to register a 6-5 come from behind victory.
The Marlins tallied three runs in the top of the fifth inning of the second game to grab a 5-1 advantage. The Generals added one run in the sixth on an RBI single by junior second baseman Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) to bring the team to within 5-2. In the seventh, W&L added another run (5-3), when Feeley scored on an errant throw by senior catcher C.J. Lindsay.
The Generals had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the eighth, and Feeley hit a looping ball over the shortstop that trickled into short left for a double. Both runners crossed the plate for W&L to tie the score, 5-5.
In the ninth, senior designated hitter Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) led off the inning, and reached safely on an errant throw by first-year second baseman Cullen Bell. Senior first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) followed with a sacrifice bunt down the first-base line. Senior pitcher Riley Koonce tried to flip the ball to first on the play, but it sailed over the first baseman's head to put runners on second and third with no one out.
Crane was then intentionally walked to load the bases to set up a force out at every base. Junior center fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) lined out to right, but it wasn't deep enough to bring home the winning run. Senior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) hit a chopper back to the pitcher who came home for the second out of the inning. Lindsay attempted to turn the double play, but hit throw to first was bobbled to reload the bases.
Feeley was next to the plate and went up in the count, 3-1. A pitch down the middle set up a full count, and then he fouled off the next pitch. On the following pitch, Feeley sent long fly ball to the opposite field, which sailed over the right fielder for the game-winning single.
Sophomore Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) threw 4.0 innings of relief to earn the victory and improve to 3-1. He did not allow a run, while striking out five. Koonce (1-3) suffered the loss for VWC. He gave up one unearned run on one hit in 1.0 inning.
Senior Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) started game one for the Generals and earned the victory to move to 3-1. He allowed just one run in 6.0 innings. He gave up five hits and struck out four. First-year Jacob Pilarski (0-1) started for the Marlins and took the loss. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) in 2.1 innings.
The Blue and White scored eight of its nine runs in the second and third innings. In the second, Baldy, Crane, Ruedisili and Wasson all had RBI singles and a fifth run came on a double steal. The Generals went up 8-0 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Baldy and a two-run single to left by Crane.
W&L totaled 30 hits over the two games, including a season-high 17 in game two. Feeley finished the day 6-for-10 with three RBI and one run. Crane was 5-for-8 with four RBI and two runs.
The Blue and White is 4-0 in the ODAC for the first time since the 2008 season. Game two of the doubleheader was delayed 45 minutes due to rain. The Generals host Alford State on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
